D1 — kṣetra
The kṣetra (D1) divides every sign into 1 equal part of 30° and gives each part a sign of its own, so a graha's D1 position is a sign in a second chart. Parāśara names it among the sixteen vargas, gives the rule for assigning its signs, and in the viveka chapter says it is consulted for body. SIA computes it for every kundli, with whole-sign houses from the D1 lagna, and reads it alongside the rāśi chart for that matter.

Parāśara's rule and office
तत्क्षेत्रं यस्य खेटस्य राशेर्यो यस्य नायकः। सूर्येन्दोर्विषमे राशौ समे तद्विपरीतकम्।।४।।
RenderingThe rāśi's lord is the lord of that kṣetra. In an odd sign the first horā is the Sun's and the second the Moon's; in an even sign the reverse.
अथ षोडशवर्गेषु चिन्ता लग्नं वदाम्यहम्। लग्नं देहस्य विज्ञानं होरायां सम्पदादिकम्।।१।।
