What a kundli is

A janam kundli (janma-patrikā, birth chart) is the sidereal sky at the moment and place of your birth: the sign rising in the east — the lagna — and the longitude of each graha, laid into twelve bhāvas counted from that lagna. Everything the texts say about a life is said about this frame: which graha stands in which house, which house-lord stands where, which sign each division of the ecliptic places a graha in.

Parāśara's opening chapter derives the word horā itself from ahorātra — day-and-night with its first and last syllables dropped — and says that from the knowledge of horā alone the results of a birth are declared. The twelve signs are then named as the limbs of Time: Meṣa the head, Mīna the feet.

What SIA computes

SIA casts the chart from first principles. Graha positions are derived for the birth instant from the Sūryasiddhānta's own algorithm — ahargaṇa, mean longitude, the manda and śīghra corrections, sidereal output — SIA's own open computational model, refined by an in-house planetary series to a tenth of an arc-minute. From the longitudes it derives the lagna, the twelve bhāvas, the birth nakṣatra and pañcāṅga, the Vimśottarī daśā periods to the prāṇa level, all sixteen divisional charts, and the aṣṭakavarga.

The reading layer is separate from the arithmetic, and that is the whole design: rules mined from the classical verses fire on the computed chart, and every interpretive sentence SIA prints carries the id of the verse it came from. Where no verse applies, SIA says so.

Reading the chart: the order the texts use

For any matter — marriage, wealth, children, career — the texts look first at the lord of the house that governs it, then at the house's kāraka graha, then at the grahas occupying and aspecting it, and finally at the divisional chart assigned to that matter. Parāśara's bhāveśa-phala chapter states the first of these witnesses for all 144 lord-in-house positions; SIA prints those verses on the bhāva pages.

Timing comes from the daśā: the Moon's birth nakṣatra names the first mahādaśā lord, and the 120-year Vimśottarī cycle unfolds from there in the fixed order the daśā chapter gives.
