The sixteen vargas

A varga divides each 30° sign into equal parts and assigns every part a sign of its own, so that a graha at one longitude stands in sixteen different charts at once. Parāśara lists the sixteen in the ṣoḍaśavarga chapter, gives the rule of each division, and in the viveka chapter says what each chart is consulted for — the body from the rāśi, wealth from the horā, siblings from the drekkāṇa, spouse from the navāṃśa, and so on to 'everything' in the ṣaṣṭyaṃśa.
