Rāśi

The twelve rāśis

The rāśi-svarūpa chapter begins by naming the twelve signs as the limbs of Viṣṇu in the form of Time — head to feet, Meṣa to Mīna — and then gives each its lord, colour, direction, caste, element and gait. Phaladīpikā adds what each sign does when it rises as the lagna. The pages below quote both.

A rāśi is 30° of the ecliptic; SIA computes the sidereal longitude of every graha and the lagna from the Sūryasiddhānta's own algorithm and places them in these twelve houses of the sky.
