What is Kundli Milan?
Kundli Milan (melāpaka, gun milan) compares two birth charts through the two birth Moons — the rāśi and nakṣatra each Moon occupies. Eight kūṭas are scored, carrying 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 guṇas in order, 36 in all. The score is a screening figure: the doṣas — nāḍī, bhakūṭa, gaṇa and the one-sided maṅgala-doṣa — are weighed separately, and the two charts' own seventh-house promise completes the judgement.

How to read the total: 18, 24 or 32 of 36
Fewer than 18 guṇas — not recommended; 18 to 24 — an acceptable middle; 25 to 32 — very good; 33 to 36 — excellent. A high total does not cancel a nāḍī or bhakūṭa doṣa, and a lower total with no doṣa and sound seventh houses is often the better match. Doctrine recordThe eight kūṭas of marriage matching are Varṇa, Vaśya, Tārā, Yoni, Graha-maitrī, Gaṇa, Bhakūṭa and Nāḍī, carrying 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 guṇas in that order — 36 guṇas in all. Each is judged from the two birth Moons (rāśi and nakṣatra), which is why the melāpaka needs BOTH charts computed together.
Doctrine recordVarṇa (1 guṇa) — the temperament class of the Moon-sign: Brāhmaṇa for the water signs (Karka, Vṛścika, Mīna), Kṣatriya for the fire signs (Meṣa, Siṃha, Dhanu), Vaiśya for the earth signs (Vṛṣabha, Kanyā, Makara), Śūdra for the air signs (Mithuna, Tulā, Kumbha). The guṇa is given when the groom's varṇa is the same as or higher than the bride's — a measure of compatible ego and work-temperament, not of caste.

Doctrine recordTārā (3 guṇas) — count the nakṣatras from one partner's birth-star to the other's and divide by nine; the remainder names the tārā (Janma, Sampat, Vipat, Kṣema, Pratyari, Sādhaka, Vadha, Maitra, Ati-maitra). What is bhakūṭa doṣa?

Can nāḍī doṣa be cancelled?
Classically yes, in the two cases the record states: the two Moons in one rāśi with different nakṣatras, or in one nakṣatra with different pādas. SIA checks both waivers and prints which one applies.
Does SIA do kundali matching by name?
SIA matches from the two birth moments — the Moon's rāśi and nakṣatra computed for each from the date, time and place — so the score rests on the sky itself. Give both people's birth details and the match is exact to the pāda.
