Phaladīpikā — the names of the house
लग्नं होरा कल्यदेहोदयाख्यं रूपं शीर्षं वर्तमानं च जन्म । वित्तं विद्या स्वान्नपानानि भुक्तिं दक्षाक्ष्यास्यं पत्रिका वाक्कुटुम्बम् ॥
TranslationLagna, Hora, Kalya (कल्य), Deha (देह) Udaya (उदय), Rupa (रूप), Seersha (शीर्ष), Vartamana (वर्तमान - living) and Janma (जन्म) are the names of the Ascendant or the first house. Vitta (वित्त- wealth), Vidya (विद्या - learning), Swa (स्व), Annapana (अन्नपान-riches food and drink), Bhukti (भुक्ति - (eating), the right eye (दक्षाक्षि - Dakshakshi), face (आस्य - Asya), letter or document (पत्रिका - Patrika), speech (वाक्-Vak) and Kutumba (कुटुम्ब) are appellations for denoting the second house.

लग्नेशो लग्नगे पुंसः सुखी भुजपराक्रमी । मनस्वी चातिचाञ्चल्यो द्विभार्यः परगोऽपि वा ।।१।।
If the lagna lord is in the lagna, the native is happy, powerful, wise, extremely restless, has two wives, and is also inclined towards other women.
लग्नेशो धनगे लाभे सलाभः पण्डितो नरः । सुशीलो धर्मविन्मानी बहुदारगुणैर्युतः ।।२।।
If the lagna lord is in the 2nd house or the 11th house, then the native is endowed with wealth, learned, virtuous, wise, and associated with many women.
लग्नेशो सहजे षष्ठे सिंहतुल्यपराक्रमी । सर्वसम्पद्युतो मानी द्विभार्यो मतिमान्सुखी ।।३।।
If the lagna lord is in the 3rd or 6th house, the native is valiant like a lion, endowed with all wealth, respected, has two wives, wise, and happy.
लग्नेशो दशमे तुर्ये पितृमातृसुखान्वितः । बहुभ्रातृयुतः कामी गुणसौन्दर्यसंयुतः ।।४।।
If the lagna lord is in the 10th or 4th house, then he is endowed with the happiness of father and mother, has many brothers, is sensual, and is endowed with qualities and beauty.
लग्नेशो पञ्चमे दानी सुतसौख्यं च मध्यमम् । प्रथमापत्यनाशः स्यात्क्रोधी लोभी नृपप्रियः ।।५।।
If the lagna lord is in the 5th house, the native is charitable, has medium happiness from children, is inferior from the first child, is angry, greedy, and fond of kings.
लग्नेशो सहजे षष्ठे सिंहतुल्यपराक्रमी । सर्वसम्पद्युतो मानी द्विभार्यो मतिमान्सुखी ।।३।।
If the lagna lord is in the 3rd or 6th house, the native is valiant like a lion, endowed with all wealth, respected, has two wives, wise, and happy.
लग्नेशो सप्तमे यस्य भार्या तस्य न जीवति । विरक्तो वा प्रवासी वा दरिद्रो वा नृपोऽपि वा ।।६।।
If the lagna lord is in the 7th house, then the native's wife does not live; he is renounced, or a foreigner, or poor, or a king.
लग्नेशो व्ययगेऽष्टस्थे सिद्धविद्याविशारदः । द्यूती चौरो महाक्रोधी परनार्यतिभोगकृत् ।।७।।
If the lagna lord is in the 12th or 8th house, then the native is skilled in accomplished sciences, a gambler, a thief, extremely angry, and inclined towards other women.
लग्नेशो नवमे पुंसो भाग्यवान् जनवल्लभः । विष्णुभक्तः पटुर्वाग्मी पुत्रदारधनैर्युतः ।।८।।
If the lagna lord is in the 9th house, the man is fortunate, beloved by people, a devotee of Vishnu, learned, eloquent, and endowed with children and a wife.

What does the 1st house signify?
Phaladīpikā's list for the 1st house is quoted above in full; the kāraka graha for it is Sun, and SIA reads its lord's placement first for any question that belongs to it.
Where is the lord of the 1st house good or bad?
Parāśara does not rank the twelve placements; he states a result for each, and the closing verses of the chapter say every result scales with the lord's strength. SIA weighs the placement with the lord's ṣaḍbala before it prints a verdict.
